Tri-Loppet & Du-Loppet

2006-2020
Paddle + Trail Run + Mountain Bike

Combining paddling (7K), trail running (5.5K), and mountain biking (13K), the Tri-Loppet & Du-Loppet point-to-point triathlon is all that is Minnesota distilled into one athletic event in the heart of the city. Connecting the waters of Minneapolis’ Chain of Lakes with the forests and prairies of Theodore Wirth Park, the event has earned a reputation as both a challenge for the region’s multi-sport elite and an opportunity for beginner outdoor enthusiasts to have a blast outside with friends and family. Put your skills to the test in this ultimate summer celebration! A Du-Loppet event (running and biking only) will also be available.

There are four event options:

  • Tri-Loppet – Individual
  • Tri-Loppet – Team
  • Du- Loppet – Individual
  • Du-Loppet – Team

Packet pick-up schedule and locations will be posted 4 weeks prior to the event. Please check back at that time for details.

Course Description

There will be three sections in the Tri-Loppet:

  • Paddling Section: 7K
  • Running Section: 5.5K
  • Biking Section: 13K

The Du-Loppet will not include the paddling section.

Stand Up Paddleboarders will use a shorter paddling route (from North Beach straight to the channel instead of going to the south end of Bde Maka Ska).

Course Markings

The course is well-marked with a combination of blue ribbons, blue arrows, and flour. However, know that there are many intersections and participants are responsible for staying on course.

There is no parking at the start area. Participants and spectators are strongly encouraged to bike to the race. Those who drive should park at the Calhoun Executive Center, at the corner of Calhoun Parkway and Excelsior Boulevard.

Race Shuttle

  • 9:05am: A shuttle bus will bring spectators and participants from the start at Bde Maka Ska to Brownie Lake. And will continue on to Wirth Chalet.
  • 9:30am — 11am: The shuttle runs from Brownie Lake to the roundabout in front of the Wirth Chalet.
  • 11am — 2pm: The shuttle runs between the Wirth Chalet, Brownie Lake, and the Executive Center.

There will only be one or two shuttle buses running, so participants in a rush should make other arrangements.

Those who are both paddling and biking, but not running, will need to get themselves from the end of the paddle to The Trailhead. Options are leaving a bike or car at Brownie (note that there is no corral there for bikes), having a friend drive you, or walking / jogging along the bike path adjacent to Wirth Parkway – about 1.5 miles.

Safety Information

  • All paddlers must have Personal Flotation Devices (PFD) in the boat and are advised to wear them. Paddlers 14 and under must wear a PFD.
  • All bikers must wear helmets while biking.

Boat Rentals

If you need to rent a boat, you can do so when you register online. Standard tandem aluminum canoes and one-person/two-person kayaks are available. PFDs and paddles are included. Boats are limited, and will be allocated first come first serve.

Rental boats are picked up on the morning of the event at Wheel Fun Rentals located at the northeast corner of Bde Maka Ska. Racers must pick up boats before 8:00 a.m. to have enough time to paddle to the start and attend the mandatory 8:30 a.m. paddlers meeting. Rentals are also available from REI and Hoigaard’s.

Boat Corral

Paddlers are responsible for picking up their own boats after the race, except for boats rented from Wheel Fun Rentals through online race registration (they are returned by the “Surly Gives a Damn” volunteer team). The boat corral area will be monitored until 2:00 p.m. after which all responsibility falls on the racer.

Bike Corral

Participants are responsible for transporting their bicycles to and from the secured bike corral. The corral will be open from 7 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. for drop-off. After the biking section is completed, bicycles may be placed back in the corral, which will be monitored until 2 p.m after which all responsibility falls on the racer.
