What is Red Bull Urban Portage?
Red Bull Urban Portage, in collaboration with the Loppet Foundation, offers both marathon and half marathon distance paddle and portage races on the Mississippi River. Race date is tentatively August 27, 2022.
How Long is the Race?
The marathon distance includes approximately 18-19 miles of paddling and 7-8 miles of portaging. There is also the option to compete in a half marathon. The course may have some fun tweaks for 2022, but here is the 2021 course for reference: RBUP 2021.
How Do I Compete?
Participants can compete solo or tandem.

Race Categories Defined:
- Men’s Full Distance – one or two men in a single vessel (single kayak, or pair in a canoe) completing entire 26.2 mile course.
- Women’s Full Distance – one or two women in a single vessel (single kayak, or pair in a canoe) completing entire 26.2 mile course.
- Mixed Full Distance – one man and one woman in a single vessel completing entire 26.2 mile course.
- Men’s Half Distance – one or two men in a single vessel (single kayak, or pair in a canoe) completing entire 13.1 mile course.
- Women’s Half Distance – one or two women in a single vessel (single kayak, or pair in a canoe) completing entire 13.1 mile course.
- Mixed Half Distance – one man and one woman in a single vessel completing entire 13.1 mile course.
How Old Do I Have to be to Compete?
All participants competing at Red Bull Urban Portage must be at least 18 years old.
