How It Works…
The Luminary Loppet is hard to describe. It is like going to a movie that airs only one night each year. But unlike a movie it is not a passive experience. Participants walk around Lake of the Isles in order to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Luminary Loppet’s many features: luminaries perfectly spaced around the lake, the Ice Pyramid, Fire Dancers, the Enchanted Forest, Ice-Cropolis, Ice-Henge, and Ice-ster Island. Participants receive cocoa and treats along the way, and are entitled to enjoy the REI Luminary Party, featuring live music and more. And adult participants receive a free Surly Beer at the Loppet’s REI Luminary Party.
Registration and Glow Sticks
Participants register for the event and receive an official Luminary Loppet glow stick. In order to enjoy the event and receive the benefits of registration participants must display the glow stick as they ski, snowshoe or walk on the groomed trails around the lake. Registrants pick up their glow sticks either at the Loppet’s Big Tent or in one of four conveniently located tents around Lake of the Isles or in the Lagoon Area between Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun. To avoid congestion, when registering participants choose a preferred start time – either 6, 6:30, 7, 7:30 or 8 p.m. Participants may start any time after their start time.
Where do I Start?
There is no official start or finish location. Participants may start at any of the four designated registration tent locations around Lake of the Isles or in the Lagoon between Lake of the Isles and Lake Calhoun – or ski, walk or snowshoe in from another location. So long as participants are displaying their official Luminary Loppet glow stick they may start anywhere . . .
Words to the Wise
It is dark on the lake. In keeping with the spirit of the event there are no electric lights on the lake. Participants should make a plan to meet up with their parties if they become separated. The five registration tents can work well for this. For example: “If we become separated meet at the tent near Ice-Cropolis.”
Registration is Capped
Registration for the Luminary Loppet and each of the five individual start times is capped. More Info.
