Minneapolis, MN — Who can forget Team USA’s gold medal run at the 2018 Winter Olympics? All those same athletes go at it every week as part of the FIS World Cup – and they are coming to Minnesota in 2020! But the Loppet Foundation doesn’t want to wait until 2020. Through a series of World Cup viewing parties on the big screen, we are bringing the World Cup to Wirth Park this winter! Beginning this weekend, cross-country ski fans and fans of skiers like our Minnesota favorite Jessie Diggins are invited to meet at The Trailhead and cheer on Jessie and Team USA as our athletes take on skiers from Norway, Sweden, Russia, Finland, and around the globe!
The parties kick off this weekend, with showings of the World Cup races in Lillehammer, Norway. Loppet staff will open the doors early for the first screening this Friday. Full weekend schedule here:
Friday, Nov. 30: Freestyle Sprint Races | 6:00 am (LIVE, in progress)
Saturday, Dec. 1: Freestyle Mass Start Distance Races | 8:00 am (replay from 3:30 am)
Sunday, Dec. 2: Classic Distance Pursuit Races | 8:00 am (replay from 3:15 am)
Meet us at The Trailhead for coffee and camaraderie. (Note that The Trailhead’s eatery – Cajun Twist – will be open in the next month – we’re just making do on refreshments for now . . .) Feel free to bring pillows and a blanket . . . For those still in school Friday, arrive at 6, have breakfast at the races and then head to school inspired!
The events will provide a unique opportunity to develop your cheers and cheer sign ideas for the 2020 World Cup. Plus now that the snowmaking trails at Wirth are open, fans can finish the morning by going for a ski just steps from The Trailhead.
Watching the World Cup races with your dog is fun, but watching the World Cup races with a cheering crew is AWESOME! There’s nothing more inspiring than starting your day with other pumped up fans, cheering for your favorite athletes as they crush the challenging World Cup courses. And you can even go ski right afterwards! Check out loppet.org for details on their upcoming World Cup viewing parties.Deb Diggins, parent of Jessie Diggins and US Ski Team Fan
