2019 Framed Bikes Pre-Loppet Race Recap

This article was posted on Sunday, January 6, 2019

Cold and wet conditions didn’t stop 285 cross-country skiers and more than a hundred fat bikers from coming out to race in the Framed Bikes Pre-Loppet — making for our largest edition of this event yet! This tuneup to the City of Lakes Loppet Festival brings together two of our favorite winter sports for a full morning of fun at Theodore Wirth Park.

Competing on a looped 17K course, freestyle skiers and fat bikers alike enjoyed zooming along the trails of Wirth, with the start and finish just adjacent to the new Trailhead facility.

Freestyle Results

We had our largest turnout for the Framed Bikes Pre-Loppet ski race, with an average finish time of 54:12 across the board. On the youth side, we were pleased to welcome nearly a hundred young skiers — all of whom did an awesome job on their races!

Competitors on the grownup side also had a great morning on the trails. The race was led by Caroline Brisbois, Daisy Richmond, and Stephanie Balas in the women’s category, and Matt Liebsch, Alex Reich and Joel Lafrance in the men’s. Three cheers for all the fantastic folks who showed up and showed out for the 2K, 3K, 5K and 17K freestyle races today!

Fat Bike Results

With over a hundred athletes racing on two wheels, we had a healthy turnout for the fat bike portion of this event. Leading the pack in the men’s 17K was Joel Lafrance, quickly followed by Steve Marshall and Steve Puzak. The women’s race was dominated by Pam Nielsen, Risa Hustad, and Laura Bednarski. The average finish time overall was 1:00:23, compared to last year’s 1:09:14 — but we think the singletrack variable might have had something to do with that…

In the 8K Fat Bike, Ted Schmid, David Goldberg, and Robert Graff led the pack on the men’s side. The women’s category was taken by Valerie Petit, our lone racer in the women’s half-distance fat bike. Helmets off to all of our fat bikers who came out to race in the Framed Bikes Pre-Loppet!

Thank You

Of course these events would not be possible without our amazing volunteers, generous sponsors, and the awesome racers who come out to make them great. So a big thanks to you from all of us at the Loppet Foundation! We hope you’ll continue to come out and celebrate winter with us by joining in for the City of Lakes Loppet Festival coming up at the end of this month. See you there!
