Minneapolis, Minn., January 26, 2018 – The Loppet Foundation leadership, staff, and volunteers, are all devastated by the loss the ski community suffered today at Theodore Wirth Park. A skier from Team Russia collapsed during the race. He was evaluated and treated by medical professionals at the scene and transported by ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
An incident like this is always heartbreaking, especially coming at a time when people have come together around a celebration of our shared passion for skiing. We extend our deepest condolences to the athlete’s family, friends, and the entire cross-country ski community as we grieve together in this loss.
A tragedy like this is impossible to make sense of, and our hearts are broken over this loss. The skier spent his final moments doing something that he loved. We call upon everyone in our community of skiers to lean on each other during this period of grief and sorrow. Our hearts go out to the athlete’s family.
