With the advent of snow, the ski club breaks up into three distinct groups that meet on different weekday evenings. The Recreational Group meets Monday evenings, the intermediate/advanced Freestyle Group meets Tuesday evenings and the intermediate/advanced Classic Group meets Thursday evenings. All the groups meet more informally on Saturday mornings for a long slow ski, often followed by coffee or hot cocoa at a local coffee shop afterward.

All groups are $100 plus Foundation membership.

Loppet Ski Club: Recreational

The Recreational Group represents a community of skiers who gather year round to enjoy the meditations, exhilarations and philosophies of the trail. New skiers, experienced skies; anyone head-over-heels for skiing is invited to join this group. During the ski season, multiple facilitators lead technique-focused workouts tailored to fit a range of abilities. The group meets bi-weekly with sessions that include presentations by Twin Cities area skiing greats, video recording and analysis, and an optional book club (for those of you that can’t get enough). The group’s skiers also meet in the off-season for pole-hiking and other outdoor outings.

Loppet Ski Club: Beginners

The Ski Club offers three opportunities for beginning level skiing: a pure beginner group, a gung-ho beginner group for those with a more Type A attitude toward skiing, and semi-private lessons for those who want to get some basic skills down quickly.

Beginner Program Options

  • Beginners: “I have never skied before, well, I did once five years ago, but it looks like so much fun! I want to learn at my own relaxed pace – but would love to do so in a group. I am ready to embark on my skiing career!”
  • Gung-Ho Beginner: “Skiing boot camp? Bring it! I don’t have any skiing skills – but I’m physically fit and I am ready to launch into my skiing career. I want technique, workouts- the whole shebang. I have every intention on racing and pursuing skiing at a higher level after this crash course.”
  • Semi-Private Lessons: The Club offers weekly lessons at Wirth Park, with up to six students. These lessons are offered on a first come-first served basis. Saturdays: 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Loppet Ski Club: Intermediate and Advanced

“Skiing is my winter tonic of choice – and I talk about it so much it kind of annoys my friends. I train because I want to go faster, and I’m always looking to move up a wave. I ski at least 3-4 times a week throughout the winter and usually do an interval and long ski every week. I race 2-5 times every year and I like having a coach and community to push me along.”

  • All participants in the Int/Adv Group receive training plans
  • All participants in the Int/Adv Group have the opportunity to join the Loppet Run-Club for longer Saturday runs at Wirth.
  • All participants skiing at this level should bring watches
Intermediate and Advanced Program Options:
  • Int/Adv Roller ski (summer and fall): “I am ready to add coached roller ski workouts to my weekly dryland regime. Don’t ask me to make any sharp turns, but I can handle some hills. I am looking forward to the technique and workout guidance.”
  • Int/Adv Dryland (summer and fall): “I love thinking about winter all summer long. I will not put on roller skis- but I’m ready for some serious foot training, hill bounding and strength training that will get me in shape for the upcoming season. I am pretty fit already and love a good conditioning circuit. Make me stronger!”
  • Int./Adv Skate and Classic Groups (small group): “I am looking forward to coaches dissecting my skiing ability in these smaller group sessions.
    • will receive training plans
    • will do individual video review of personal technique
    • will be issued a training log
  • Int./Advanced Classic and Skate Groups (large group): “I am looking forward to convening with a large group to train. I like the idea of getting a mix of technique pointers from coaches, as well as various workout opportunities. I love being given workouts and doing them in a large group.”

Loppet Ski Club: Wave 1

“I am fit and train year round for skiing and other sports, but when winter rolls around I’ve got my sights set on skiing alone. I may have missed out on my Olympic dreams – but I’m looking forward to connecting with other skiers who want to train and race hard. I’m looking forward to monitoring my progress throughout the season with lactate testing, personal video review, and time trials. I can run, bike, and sharpen my own roller ski tips. I’ve got my training plan posted on my refrigerator and follow it 5 days per week.”

Loppet Ambassadors (or the Loppet Race Team)

This group is designed for higher-end racers who want to train together, wear the Loppet colors and give back to the Loppet community by helping with an occasional coaching session for juniors or beginning level skiers.
